Projector CE Certification: EU Compliance Requirements and Key Testing Items

In today's digital and intelligent era, projectors are no longer equipment exclusive to meeting rooms. Thanks to their large-screen display capabilities and flexible deployment, they are now widely used across a diverse range of scenarios — classrooms, business presentations, exhibitions, and home theaters — making them a highly efficient display terminal that works across multiple settings.

However, as products enter global markets, the prerequisite for being "sellable" is being "compliant." The European Union, one of the most strictly regulated markets in the world, has established a comprehensive technical regulatory framework centered on product safety, reliability, and environmental friendliness. For projectors — as mains-powered electronic display products — obtaining the CE marking is an indispensable first step toward free circulation within the EU market.

1. CE Marking: Your Passport to the European Market

The CE marking is not a "quality certification" in the conventional sense. Rather, it is a Declaration of Conformity made by the manufacturer, affirming that the product complies with the relevant EU directives and harmonized standards. By affixing the CE marking, the manufacturer declares that the product meets the essential requirements set out under the EU's "New Approach" to technical harmonization and standards in areas such as safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and environmental protection, and may therefore circulate freely within the European Economic Area (EEA).

For projectors, the core task of CE compliance is to systematically address each applicable EU directive and harmonized standard, complete the corresponding testing, and build a complete Technical File to support the Declaration of Conformity.

2. Four Core Directives for Projector CE Certification

1. Low Voltage Directive (LVD)

This directive focuses on electrical safety. It requires projectors to be structurally designed to effectively prevent risks of electric shock, overheating, mechanical hazards, and fire, and to provide adequate insulation, grounding, and protective measures to ensure user safety under both normal operating conditions and single fault conditions. The commonly applied harmonized standard is EN 62368-1 (Safety requirements for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment). Testing covers items such as dielectric strength, leakage current, temperature rise, mechanical strength, and abnormal operation.

2. Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMC)

This directive addresses two dimensions: "not interfering with others" and "not being interfered with by others." On one hand, it limits the electromagnetic emissions generated by the projector so as not to affect the normal operation of surrounding equipment; on the other, it requires the projector to maintain stable operation in an external electromagnetic environment. Testing is divided into two categories: Emission and Immunity. Commonly applied standards include EN 55032 and EN 55035, supplemented by items such as harmonic current emissions, voltage fluctuations, and flicker.

3. Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS)

This directive controls hazardous substances at the source. It sets strict limits on the content of substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), driving electrical and electronic products toward being non-toxic, harmless, and recyclable. This represents both environmental protection and a safeguard for end-user health. The directive is typically implemented by dismantling the finished product and testing each homogeneous material individually.

4. Energy-related Products Directive (ErP)

This directive addresses energy efficiency and ecodesign. It requires energy-consuming products to meet specified levels in terms of standby power consumption, operating efficiency, and resource utilization efficiency, guiding manufacturers toward more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly products. For projectors, key areas of focus include light source efficacy and power consumption in standby and off modes.

3. Conclusion

For projector manufacturers aiming to expand overseas, CE certification is both a compliance baseline and proof of product quality. Rather than scrambling at the last minute during the export stage, it is far better to incorporate the requirements of LVD, EMC, RoHS, and ErP into design considerations as early as the R&D and prototyping phase. This approach not only significantly shortens the certification cycle and reduces rectification costs, but also enables products to enter the European market on a much more solid footing.
