US Standard Power Strip UL Certification Standards:

  • UL 498 Standard for Attachment Plugs and Receptacles
  • UL 1363 Standard for Relocatable Power Taps

Scope of Standards:

  1. UL 1363 covers indoor-use, cord-and-plug-connected, relocatable power taps (RPTs) rated 250 V AC or less and 20 amperes or less. RPTs may include integrated Class 2 power supplies with integrated leads and/or connector outputs. According to the National Electrical Code NFPA 70, RPTs are used as portable power connections for cord-and-plug-connected equipment and shall not be used as fixed wiring for structures or fixed furniture (e.g., permanent countertop applications in kitchens and bathrooms).

  2. Cord-and-plug-connected products covered by UL 1363 that have fewer than three receptacles and are equipped with luminaires are included in the Portable Electric Luminaires standard, UL 153.

  3. Cord-and-plug-connected products described by UL 1363 that have fewer than three receptacles and use electromagnetic interference filters are included in the Electromagnetic Interference Filters standard, UL 1283.

  4. Cord-and-plug-connected products described by UL 1363 that have fewer than three receptacles and use Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) are included in Type 3 SPDs within the Surge Protective Devices standard, UL 1449.

  5. UL 1363 covers RPTs with more than two receptacles using SPDs, which shall also comply with the applicable requirements for cord-connected Type 3 SPDs in UL 1449.

  6. Cord-and-plug-connected products with ground-fault protection described in UL 1363 are included in the requirements for portable GFCIs in the Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters standard, UL 943.

  7. UL 1363 does not cover RPTs intended for use with medical equipment, including those using hospital-grade receptacles or plugs (see 52.1). RPTs are not for use in Category 2 (General patient care) or Category 1 (Critical patient care) spaces, or near patient care in healthcare facilities.

  8. UL 1363 does not cover cord-and-plug-connected products, Healthcare Facility Outlet Assemblies (HCOA), included in the Outline of Investigation for Cord-and-Plug-Connected HCOA, UL 2930. HCOA is intended as a movable power connection for cord-and-plug-connected medical electrical equipment in Category 2 or 1 spaces, including near patient care with patient equipment grounding points in healthcare facilities.

  9. UL 1363 does not cover cord-and-plug-connected assemblies, Special Purpose Relocatable Power Taps (SPRPT), included in the Outline of Investigation UL 1363A. SPRPTs are power distribution assemblies intended to power plug-connected assemblies of movable equipment mounted on racks, desktops, or bases. SPRPTs are intended as components of complete equipment submitted for investigation, not for direct field installation. SPRPTs shall be integral to equipment assemblies and only permanently connected by qualified personnel assembling medical electrical equipment systems complying with IEC 60601-1. SPRPTs are not suitable for use in patient care areas.

  10. RPTs may incorporate a reel for the power cord and plug. Reels with pull-out receptacles or cord connectors are included in the Reels standard, UL 355.

  11. UL 1363 does not cover RPTs with work surfaces or intended to support weight loads other than those specified in 6.16 for storing handheld electronic devices and charging devices (e.g., mobile phones, chargers, etc.).

  12. UL 1363 requirements cover RPTs with isolated secondary circuits.

  13. UL 1363 requirements cover RPTs with batteries located in isolated secondary circuits. (See UL 1363 Supplement SB - Relocatable Power Taps Incorporating Batteries).

  14. Products with standby battery function or other uninterruptible power supply equipment located in the primary circuit shall comply with applicable requirements in the Uninterruptible Power Supply Equipment standard, UL 1778.

  15. RPTs with three or more receptacles may use Light Emitting Diode (LED) luminaires.

  16. Requirements of the Furniture Power Distribution Units standard, UL 962A, cover cord-and-plug-connected products described in 1.1 that are fixed to portable or fixed furniture using tools.
