Introduction to UL 2738 Testing Standards for Wireless Chargers

As an emerging high-tech charging solution, wireless charging has garnered significant attention in recent years. Its superior user experience and the convenience of eliminating cables have made it increasingly popular among consumers. However, product quality and safety remain critical concerns for both consumers and manufacturers. UL 2738 is the key testing standard for wireless charging products. This article outlines the standard from three perspectives: component analysis, testing items, and standard requirements.

I. Product Component Analysis

A wireless charging product primarily consists of two parts: the wireless charger (transmitter) and the charging device (receiver). The wireless charger can be broadly divided into a power transmitter and a transmission coil array, while the charging device comprises a receiver coil array and a receiving power supply.

The power transmitter in the wireless charger mainly functions as a regulated power supply, providing stable voltage to the transmission coil array to prevent fluctuations that could affect charging efficiency. The transmission array is composed of multiple coils that generate an electromagnetic field to transfer energy via the principle of electromagnetic induction. Similarly, the receiver array consists of multiple coils designed to capture the electromagnetic field from the transmitter and convert it into electrical energy. The receiving power supply acts as a DC power source, delivering current to the receiver circuitry.

II. Testing Items

The UL 2738 standard covers a comprehensive range of testing items for wireless charging products, including but not limited to:

  1. Appearance and Safety Rating Inspection: Evaluation of product appearance, along with safety tests for water resistance, fire resistance, and shock resistance.

  2. Charging Rate Test: Verification of whether the wireless charger’s charging speed complies with industry standards.

  3. Interference Analysis Test: Assessment of electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by the wireless charging device to ensure it meets national standards and does not disrupt surrounding electronic equipment.

  4. Energy Efficiency Verification: Testing to confirm that the energy efficiency of the wireless charging device meets industry benchmarks, ensuring performance is not below standard requirements.

  5. Telemetry Data Testing: Monitoring operational data such as temperature and voltage during operation to ensure the device functions within specified parameters.

III. Standard Requirements

UL 2738 is a mandatory testing standard for wireless charging products. It requires that products demonstrate compliance in terms of stability, service life, electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), failure mode analysis, durability, and appearance.

Electrical safety is a critical requirement. UL 2738 stipulates that both the charger and the charging device must incorporate protective measures against fire, water, shock, and electric leakage, with safety ratings conforming to the standard.

Furthermore, electromagnetic compatibility is a key focus area. The standard requires wireless chargers and devices to pass multiple tests, including radio frequency emission assessments, IEC testing, CDN (Coupling/Decoupling Network) testing, ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) testing, and electrostatic discharge immunity tests.
