Product Description

I. Introduction

As smart home technology advances at an extraordinary pace, smart devices have become deeply embedded in everyday life. They not only make operation far more convenient, but also create a cleaner, more visually pleasing living environment — putting an end to the tangled mess of crisscrossing power cords that used to be the norm.

A smart socket (or smart plug) generally refers to a socket with a built-in Wi-Fi module that can be operated through a smartphone app. At its most basic level, it allows users to remotely switch the socket's power on and off, and to set scheduled on/off timers via the app.

It should be emphasized that a smart socket may only be placed on the market after an authoritative third-party testing organization has verified its compliance with the relevant product safety standards. Equally, this means the manufacturing plant is subject to rigorous periodic surveillance inspections, ensuring consistent product quality over time.

II. Certification Testing Standards for Smart Sockets

1. Chinese National Standards (CCC Certification)

Smart sockets sold in the Chinese market must obtain the China Compulsory Product Certification (CCC, commonly known as "3C"). The principal applicable standards are:

Standard No.

Standard Title

GB/T 2099
Plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes

GB/T 1002
Single-phase plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes — Types, basic parameters and dimensions

GB/T 1003
Three-phase plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes — Types, basic parameters and dimensions

2. US Market (UL Certification)

Smart sockets exported to the United States are subject to different UL safety standards depending on product form and added features:

Socket Type

Main Standard

Surge Protection

USB Charging

Smart Control

Telephone/Network

American-style adapter
UL 498A

UL 1449 UL 1310 UL 60730 / UL 244A UL 497A / UL 497B
American-style power strip
UL 1363 + UL 498

UL 1449 UL 1310 / UL 60950    UL 60730 / UL 244A      UL 497A / UL 497B
Desktop socket

UL 962A

UL 1449 UL 1310 / UL 60950 UL 60730 / UL 244A UL 497A / UL 497B

Note: The standards actually applicable to a product stack up according to its combination of functions (e.g., whether it offers surge protection, USB charging, or networked control). UL standards are also subject to ongoing revision (for instance, UL 60950 has been progressively superseded by UL 62368). Always confirm the applicable edition with the certification body.

III. Documents Required for Certification Testing

To apply for smart socket certification, manufacturers generally need to prepare the following technical documents:

  1. Product structural dimension drawings;

  2. Product exploded view;

  3. Circuit schematic diagram;

  4. PCB layout (printed circuit board) drawing;

  5. Bill of materials / component list (including part numbers and certification file numbers);

  6. Product user manual (briefly describing product parameters and functions);

  7. Product photographs (exterior photos of the finished unit and photos of its internal structure);

  8. Product label (or label artwork).

IV. Certification Process

  1. Consultation — Identify the product type, target market, and applicable standards.

  2. Quotation — Prepare a quotation based on the required test items.

  3. Agreement signing — Both parties confirm the engagement and their respective rights and obligations.

  4. Document submission — Provide the technical documents listed above for the product under application.

  5. Sample submission — Deliver or ship samples to the testing laboratory (e.g., BeiCe Testing).

  6. Pre-testing — Identify potential non-conformities in advance to allow for corrective action.

  7. Formal testing — Conduct full testing in accordance with the applicable standards.

  8. Factory inspection — Audit the manufacturer's quality assurance capability.

  9. Certificate issuance / project completion and settlement — Issue the certificate upon successful testing and finalize payment.

  10. Follow-up services — Provide ongoing support for modifications, scope extensions, and annual surveillance.
